Create food producing, perennial agro-ecosystems that build soil and get easier to manage over time. Most people choose to do this around the perimeter of their backyards.
Food forestry fits into the larger category of Agroforestry; Agroforestry is, in its most basic definition, the integration of trees into agricultural systems. Food forests are agroforests that focus on planting a canopy of long-term food producing landscapes while utilizing the available sunlight from the beginning with successional plantings of shorter-term species.
These plantings include layers of trees, shrubs, ground covers, and vines that are strategically planted symbiotically into one system which is designed to produce more as it matures (with proper maintenance). It can provide food for your family and food for beneficial native insect + animal populations as well.
